Uzbekistan and UNICEF emphasize increasing Afghanistan's access to medicine

These consultations are taking place amid an unprecedented rise in medicine prices and a decline in their availability in Afghan markets, which has made procuring medicines and patients' access to healthcare services increasingly difficult.

Tajuddin Ayoubi, the UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan, held discussions during a meeting with officials from the Agency for the Development of the Medical and Pharmaceutical Industry under Uzbekistan's Ministry of Health, focusing on expanding cooperation to provide high-quality medicines to Afghanistan. One of the key topics of this meeting was creating opportunities for Afghanistan to access pharmaceutical products manufactured in Uzbekistan. Disruptions in imports have exacerbated the medicine shortage.

The closure of border crossings and the halt of medicine imports from Pakistan have intensified problems in Afghanistan's pharmaceutical market. A reduction in international aid has also impacted this situation, making the medicine supply crisis even more challenging.

Prior to the closure of the border crossings between Afghanistan and Pakistan in October of last year, more than 70 percent of Afghanistan's required medicines were imported from Pakistan. The suspension of this process has posed serious challenges to meeting a significant portion of the country's pharmaceutical needs.

At the same time, local sources in recent days have reported serious issues in healthcare services and medical equipment in the provinces of Kandahar, Uruzgan, Zabul, and Helmand.

According to these sources, shortages of facilities and medical equipment have made the process of treating patients more difficult. Residents of remote areas and low-income families are suffering the most from this situation and face greater obstacles in accessing healthcare services.

In such circumstances, the discussions between Uzbekistan and UNICEF have focused on expanding cooperation to supply high-quality medicines and to provide Afghanistan with access to Uzbekistan's pharmaceutical products.

Uzbekistan's officials and the UNICEF Representative in Afghanistan have discussed ways to facilitate the supply of medicines to the country.
