Meloni: Italy-US relations must return to normal

In an interview in Rome, she emphasized that she has no intention of fueling the continuation of this dispute and does not want the matter to escalate further. According to Meloni, Italy's foreign policy has not changed, and this tension should not be allowed to negatively impact the country's economy.


She also addressed the cancellation of the Italian Foreign Minister's trip to Washington, describing the action as a "diplomatic signal"; however, she added that the time has now come for both sides to return to normal cooperation.


This tension began after the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France, where Donald Trump claimed that Meloni had "insisted" on taking a joint photo with him and that he had only agreed out of pity. These remarks prompted a sharp reaction from the Italian Prime Minister.


Meloni called the claim entirely false and said in a video: "Neither I nor Italy beg for anything."


Reports indicate that part of this dispute, beyond this issue, also relates to Italy's lack of full support for U.S. operations against Iran's nuclear program and the matter of using Italian military bases.


Despite this public tension, the two sides have a history of close relations. Meloni has previously described herself as a "bridge" between Europe and the United States and was one of the few European leaders who attended Trump's second inauguration ceremony.


In a Cabinet Council meeting as well, she once again emphasized that it is necessary for normal and stable cooperation between Italy and the United States to continue.
