Israel announces the killing of a senior Hamas commander in Gaza

In a joint statement, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, and Israel Katz, the country's Defense Minister, said that this attack was carried out in response to an action by Hamas; an action that, according to them, had wounded two Israeli soldiers in the early hours of Saturday following the explosion of a bomb.

Meanwhile, Gaza's health officials have reported that as a result of this attack, five people were killed and at least 25 others were wounded.

The Hamas movement also issued a statement condemning this attack and describing it as a violation of the ceasefire agreement; however, the statement made no mention of the killing of Raed Saad.

According to Israeli officials, this attack represents the highest-level assassination of a senior Hamas official since the Gaza ceasefire agreement was implemented in October.

The Israeli army announced on Saturday, December 13, that it had killed Raed Saad, a senior Hamas commander and one of the planners of the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, during an attack on a vehicle in Gaza City.
