UN: More than 75 percent of Afghan children in Pakistan are deprived of education

This report, released on Monday, May 5, under the title "Living in the Shadows" by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Mixed Migration Centre, examines the situation of Afghan children and adolescents in Pakistan.


According to the findings of this report, approximately 77 percent of the children surveyed have no access to education or vocational training. Financial difficulties, lack of identity documents, and the need to work have been cited as the primary reasons for this deprivation.


The report states that the absence of legal documents and the constant fear of arrest have forced many of these children into a life of hiding, depriving them of basic services. Nearly half of the children also lack access to health and medical services.


The situation is reported to be more dire for unaccompanied children. According to the statistics, 73 percent of these children are compelled to work to cover living expenses, compared to 33 percent among children with guardians. Additionally, 82 percent of unaccompanied girls have turned to work.


The report also highlights the inadequate housing conditions faced by many refugees and warns that the pressures stemming from migration, poverty, and fear of deportation have had serious consequences on the mental health of children. According to the findings, 70 percent of children reported feelings of depression, and 44 percent reported anxiety.


The risks of arrest, violence, abuse, and forced marriage are among the other threats these children face.


In conclusion, the report calls on the Government of Pakistan to review its policies on the detention and deportation of refugees and to create conditions for the legal registration and access to identity documents for Afghan citizens.


These findings are based on a survey of 1,109 individuals, including children, youth, and guardians.
