UN: More than 13 million people in Afghanistan face severe food insecurity

According to the organization, nearly five million children and pregnant or breastfeeding women in Afghanistan suffer from malnutrition. The United Nations has warned that the combination of economic collapse, widespread unemployment, climate change, and increasing regional pressures has made the food situation for the population more critical than ever.


John Aylieff, head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan, has emphasized that food aid is vital for millions of women and children in the country and that this assistance is "essential, not optional."


He has warned that a reduction in food reserves used to treat malnutrition could put the lives of hundreds of thousands of mothers and children at risk.


The World Food Programme has also stated that many families lack the ability to procure sufficient food, and in many cases, parents are forced to allocate the limited available food solely to their children.

The United Nations World Food Programme has announced that more than 13.8 million people in Afghanistan are currently facing acute food insecurity. The agency says the hunger crisis in the country, due to rising prices and regional tensions, continues to worsen.
