Sources: Former Sangin Helmand district governor is being tortured in Taliban prison

According to sources, Mr. Achakzai has been held in a Taliban prison for some time and is being subjected to torture.


Sources add that there is no information available regarding the fate or whereabouts of Ruhullah Achakzai.


The Taliban have not yet commented on the matter.


The Taliban leader announced a general amnesty after returning to power; however, according to reports, over the past four years, the group’s fighters have repeatedly detained, tortured, and taken revenge on former military personnel, former government employees, journalists, and civil and human rights activists.

Local sources in Helmand say that Ruhullah Achakzai, the former district governor of Sangin district, has been detained by the Taliban’s intelligence.
