Taliban refuses to attend Tehran regional meeting on Afghanistan

Zia Ahmad Takal, deputy spokesman of this ministry, stated in a press release on (Saturday, 22 Qaws) that the Taliban have received the invitation to this meeting; however, it has been decided that they will not participate in it.

According to him, the Taliban believe that Afghanistan currently maintains active relations with regional countries through existing regional mechanisms and cooperation frameworks, and has achieved significant progress in this regard; a matter which, in the Taliban's view, eliminates the need to attend this meeting.

Tehran is scheduled to host a regional meeting focused on "developments related to Afghanistan" on 25 and 26 Qaws. Reducing tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan has been cited as one of the main topics of this meeting. Special representatives from Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, China, and Russia will be present at this gathering.

Ismail Baghaei, spokesman for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had previously stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran considers security and stability in its neighboring region to be of fundamental importance and, in this regard, seeks to help reduce tensions and strengthen understanding among regional countries. He had expressed hope that this meeting could play an effective role in regional convergence.

This meeting is taking place at a time when relations between the Taliban and Pakistan have faced serious tensions. In recent months, Iran has repeatedly announced its readiness to mediate between the two sides; however, these efforts have not yet yielded any tangible results.

Additionally, Iran's representative at the recent United Nations Security Council meeting expressed concern over the expansion of terrorist groups' activities in Afghanistan and stated that developments in this country directly impact Iran. He emphasized that without the formation of an inclusive national government, the crisis and conflict in Afghanistan will intensify.

The Taliban Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that this group will not attend the regional meeting in Tehran on Afghanistan.
