Panjshir Emerald to be auctioned for the first time in Kabul

Mohammad Agha Hakim, the Taliban governor in Panjshir, has described this initiative as an opportunity to showcase the province's mineral capabilities. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 28, with the participation of merchants and buyers.

According to the Taliban, the value of emeralds sold from Panjshir mines this year has reached approximately 400 million afghanis, equivalent to 6.12 million dollars. These mines are considered among Afghanistan's key sources of precious stones, and the extraction and sale of their products have continued in recent years under Taliban administration.

The Taliban states that since returning to power in 2021, it has signed contracts with dozens of investors—primarily from China, Russia, and Iran—for the extraction of precious stones and other mineral resources. Nevertheless, Afghanistan's precious stone mining sector continues to face challenges such as a lack of investment and insufficient international expertise.

Information released by the Taliban regarding emerald sales is typically limited to the quantity of stones sold and total revenue. Details on starting prices, the level of competition among buyers, and criteria for determining the value of the emeralds are not regularly made available to the public. Likewise, no clear reports have been issued on the pre-sale evaluation of these stones by independent experts or reputable laboratories.

Local Taliban officials in Panjshir have announced that, for the first time, emeralds extracted from the province's mines will be put up for auction at the Afghanistan International Exhibition Center in Kabul.
