Norwegian Refugee Council: A year after the earthquake, Kunar families still need help

According to this organization, a large number of these families are still living in tents and temporary shelters and require urgent assistance to improve their situation.

Staff from this council recently traveled to the affected areas in Kunar Province and met directly with earthquake-affected families. Giacomo Caridi, the Norwegian Refugee Council's regional director in Afghanistan, said on Friday, October 8, that humanitarian needs in these areas remain extensive and that only a limited number of those affected have been able to secure suitable shelter.

Caridi, emphasizing the need to increase aid, warned that without support from relief organizations, many families will not be able to overcome the consequences of this event and resume their normal lives. He called for continued humanitarian support to address the basic needs of the earthquake survivors.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake in early September of last year shook Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, and parts of neighboring areas. This event caused the destruction of numerous mud and adobe homes, especially in Kunar, leaving many families with heavy losses. The fact that the earthquake struck in the middle of the night also led to some people being trapped under rubble.

This disaster occurred at a time when residents of the affected areas were already grappling with widespread poverty and food insecurity. The Taliban announced after the earthquake that more than two thousand people had lost their lives in the event; however, even after a year, it has still not been possible to meet the basic needs of many survivors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has announced that, one year after the deadly earthquake in Kunar, many affected families have still not been able to rebuild their homes or gain access to safe drinking water.
