World Press Freedom Day; EU says 129 journalists killed in 2025

World Press Freedom Day is commemorated every year on May 3 (13th of Thour) at the initiative of the United Nations and UNESCO to emphasize the importance of freedom of expression and the role of media in democratic societies. The European Union, in a report marking the occasion, has described media freedom and diversity as fundamental pillars of democracy.


The report states that journalists and media workers continue to face serious security and professional threats—threats that, in their most extreme form, lead to their murder.


To address this situation, the European Union has adopted two legal frameworks: one to prevent baseless lawsuits and judicial pressures against journalists, and the other, the "European Media Freedom Act," to strengthen media independence, transparency, and security.


In the latest World Press Freedom Index, published by Reporters Without Borders for 2026, Afghanistan ranks 175th out of 180 countries—a position unchanged from the previous year, indicating a deep crisis in the media landscape. The report states that the Taliban, through extensive regulations, are seeking to control the media, limit critical oversight, and impose their own propaganda narratives. Following Afghanistan are countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, North Korea, and Eritrea, while Norway tops the list for the tenth consecutive year, and Eritrea ranks last for the third year in a row.


Another section of the report addresses the situation in Gaza, where more than 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army since October 2023, with at least 70 of them losing their lives while performing their professional duties.

On World Press Freedom Day, European Union officials say that violence against journalists remains a serious global challenge and that achieving true democracy is impossible without free media. According to statistics, at least 129 journalists were killed in 2025 alone, bringing the total number of victims since 1993 to 1,922.
