Putin: The war in Ukraine is approaching its final stages

In his speech, Putin held Western countries primarily responsible for starting the war and said the West has failed to honor its commitments following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. He reiterated that Russia will continue its military operation until it achieves its objectives in the war.


The ceremony took place amid a military parade this year that, unlike in previous years, featured no extensive display of tanks and missiles. Reports indicate that Russian officials were concerned about the possibility of a Ukrainian attack on Moscow's Red Square. The Ukraine war has now entered its fifth year and has become one of the most costly conflicts in contemporary times for Russia.


According to estimates, the war has left hundreds of thousands dead, devastated vast areas of Ukraine, and placed heavy pressure on Russia's economy. Currently, nearly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory is under Russian control; however, Russian forces have still not managed to capture the entire Donbas region, and their rate of advance has slowed in recent months.


The Kremlin has also announced that peace efforts mediated by Donald Trump, President of the United States, are currently on hold. Nevertheless, Putin stated that he would be prepared to meet with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, if the groundwork for a lasting agreement is laid.


In another part of his remarks, the Russian president said he is ready to discuss the future structure of European security and would prefer that Gerhard Schröder, former German Chancellor, play a role in these negotiations. Putin described Schröder as a figure who understands Russia's perspectives and has consistently supported the creation of a shared European security architecture that includes Russia.

Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, has stated that the Ukraine war is, in his view, nearing its end. He made these remarks on the sidelines of the anniversary ceremony commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, an event held annually on May 9 in Moscow.
