MEP: Taliban uses smartphones to hide repression

Newman has emphasized that the Taliban is using this measure to control the flow of information, conceal suppressions, and silence dissenting voices.


Ms. Newman wrote on her X page on Friday, 29 Jowza, that the Taliban is well aware that the dissemination of images and videos of women's protests, human rights violations, and the group's own decrees could undermine their dominance over society.


According to this Member of the European Parliament, authoritarian regimes learn from one another and are well aware that "controlling information means controlling power."


Newman has urged European Union institutions to pay greater attention to the situation in Afghanistan and has warned that the Taliban's increasing restrictions on citizens' access to information could lead this country toward greater isolation.


She continued: "What begins with silencing the voices of women in Herat will ultimately lead to a regime's effort to completely sever a society's connection to the world."


These remarks come as a Taliban military court has previously announced in an official letter the prohibition of smartphone use for all government employees.


The letter warns that in the event of violation of this order, the offender's phone will be smashed and the individual themselves will be referred to a military court.

Hanna Newman, a Member of the European Parliament, has stated in response to the Taliban's recent decision to ban the use of smartphones in Afghan offices that this group is attempting to completely sever Afghanistan's connection to the world.
