Nasir Ahmad Fayeq: Women should play a role in Afghanistan's future political process

Faiq stated on Monday, September 21, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, during a meeting titled "Women, Peace, Justice, and National Reconciliation in Afghanistan," that five years after the Taliban's return to power, Afghanistan continues to face deep political, humanitarian, economic, social, and human rights crises.


He said that despite diplomatic efforts and the use of various international mechanisms, a "sustainable, just, and inclusive" political solution for Afghanistan has yet to be found. According to him, women must participate directly and meaningfully in any future political process concerning Afghanistan.


Afghanistan's UN representative stressed that women should not be seen solely as victims in need of support, but also recognized as political actors and decision-makers regarding Afghanistan's future. He stated that women's participation should not be limited to symbolic presence or consultation.


Faiq also emphasized justice, accountability, recognition of victims, dialogue, and national reconciliation, saying that without justice and accountability, achieving a sustainable political solution would be difficult. He added that UN member states and regional partners must create the conditions for an "inclusive, Afghan-led, and Afghanistan-centered" political process.


He concluded by saying: "Afghanistan's future must be determined by the people of Afghanistan."



Nasir Ahmad Faiq, Afghanistan's permanent representative to the United Nations, says that the Taliban is merely one of Afghanistan's political parties and cannot represent the country on its own. He has emphasized that Afghan women must be involved in the country's future political process.
