The Islamic Republic of Iran executed an Afghan citizen on charges of drug-related crimes.

According to this report, this Afghan citizen had been arrested on charges related to drug offenses and was ultimately sentenced to death by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

To date, no details have been released regarding the identity of this individual, and it is unclear whether, during the judicial proceedings, his basic rights—including access to a defense lawyer and the opportunity to meet with family members—were respected or not. Hengaw has stated that this execution took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as the Taliban, have so far shown no reaction to this incident.

According to reports from human rights organizations, since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan in Asad 1400 [August 2021], the number of executions of Afghan citizens in Iran has been on an upward trend. According to statistics released by these organizations, in just the past eight months, at least 864 people have been executed in Iran, 49 of whom were Afghan citizens.

The human rights organization "Hengaw" has reported that the death sentences of four prisoners in Iranian prisons have been carried out, one of whom was an Afghan national.
