Asif Durrani: The Taliban regime will not be sustainable without public participation

Mr. Durrani wrote on his X page on Monday, 14th of Thawr, that raising the issue of regime change may align with the goals of some foreign actors; however, this approach does not resolve Afghanistan's fundamental problem.


The former diplomat also pointed out that the Taliban have not embraced a pluralistic approach or political participation; a matter which, according to him, has damaged the group's domestic and international legitimacy.


Durrani stressed that without broad public participation and general consent, a political system cannot be effective or sustainable. He added that power in Afghanistan is currently concentrated between the Haqqani faction in Kabul and Mullah Hibatullah in Kandahar, and the governing structure lacks broad political participation.


He further warned that no system built on the exclusion of others will endure, and if the political structure does not reflect the diversity of Afghan society, it will always be vulnerable to instability and collapse.


In Durrani's view, change in Afghanistan is inevitable; however, how it occurs is of fundamental importance. He emphasized that the Taliban's understanding of this reality will play a determining role in the country's future.

Asif Durrani, Pakistan's former special envoy for Afghanistan, has emphasized that the main solution to Afghanistan's crisis does not lie in "regime change," but rather depends on the establishment of an inclusive and legitimate government by Afghanistan's own citizens.
