Richard Bennett: Any meeting with the Taliban in Brussels is an insult to the Afghan people

Mr. Bennett, on Monday, the first of Cancer, reposted the stance of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, stating that respect for human rights and laws related to refugees is an imperative.


He also stated that any meeting with the Taliban in Brussels would be an insult to the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and girls.


The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights had previously expressed strong concern over the approval of the new European Union regulation on the rapid return of migrants and Afghan asylum seekers, urging EU member states to align its implementation with human rights obligations and refugee laws.


Under this law, approved by the European Parliament on June 17, the use of pre-deportation detention has been expanded, and member states can establish so-called "return" centers in third countries.


According to reports, a Taliban delegation led by Abdul Qahar Balkhi, spokesperson for the group's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will arrive in Brussels today, Monday, the first of Cancer.


The delegation is scheduled to discuss with the European Commission, on the first day of their visit, the issue of accelerating the deportation process for Afghan migrants from EU member states.


Meanwhile, the European Union has previously announced that these discussions are technical in nature, focused on migration issues, and do not constitute recognition of the Taliban.

Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights for Afghanistan, has criticized a new European Union regulation that enables the rapid deportation of asylum seekers.
