Media Suppression; Taliban Intelligence Detains Local Journalist Again in Badakhshan

Mr. Qasemi's wife also announced in a Facebook post that Taliban intelligence agents arrested him around 9 p.m.


According to one of the journalist's close associates, the reason for his arrest was the publication of a critical opinion on Facebook. In this post, criticism was leveled at what was described as the Taliban's ethnic-based approach to opium smugglers in Badakhshan.


Mr. Qasemi's associates say this is the second time this year that he has been arrested by Taliban intelligence.


According to them, in the previous detention, the Taliban's Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice had filed a complaint against Mr. Qasemi, citing his failure to grow a beard and non-compliance with Taliban policies as the reason.


Meanwhile, Reporters Without Borders has ranked Afghanistan 175th out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index. The organization says criticism of the Taliban has been banned, self-censorship has spread among media outlets, and journalists are constantly at risk of arrest.

Informed sources say that Nazim Qasemi, a local journalist in Badakhshan province, was arrested by Taliban intelligence on the evening of Wednesday, August 14.
