As intra-group tensions rise; Sirajuddin Haqqani makes surprise trip to Kandahar

This trip comes at a time when he has recently voiced rare critical positions regarding the behavior of Taliban members toward the country's citizens.

According to local sources in Kandahar, Haqqani's presence in the province had not been announced in advance. Videos of him at the Aynomina Mosque have also been released, showing that he participated in Friday prayers and afterward met with a number of residents. In the published footage, worshippers have gone to welcome him and gathered around him.

This trip is taking place as rifts among the Taliban's senior figures have become more evident than ever before. A recent report from the United Nations Security Council has also revealed the existence of serious internal disputes within the group.

Tensions have particularly intensified following Haqqani's recent speech in Khost province, where he explicitly criticized the Taliban's governance methods. In that speech, Haqqani questioned policies based on pressure and intimidation, emphasizing that those who were once victims of oppression by great powers should not today govern the people through humiliation and fear.

Amid escalating disputes within the Taliban's leadership, Sirajuddin Haqqani, the group's interior minister, unexpectedly traveled to Kandahar province on Friday.
