Dozens of Afghan migrants die from extreme cold on their way to Iran

According to these sources, the bodies of at least 15 people have been transferred to the districts of Keshan and Adraskan in Herat province; however, some reports indicate that dozens have perished.

One Afghan migrant who visited the Shahid Mazars and Taybad Hospital morgues in Razavi Khorasan Province told media outlets in an interview that the number of victims exceeds 40. Nevertheless, this figure has not yet been officially confirmed.

At the same time, there are reports that a number of Afghan migrants have gone missing along the Iran border. Local sources say that in recent days, hundreds had set off toward Iran; but they encountered a severe wave of cold on the way—a wave that continues unabated.

Based on these reports, the migrants intended to enter the Iranian city of Taybad via unofficial routes and the Islam Qala crossing. Weather conditions in the border area have been snowy and rainy, with temperatures dropping sharply. It is said that the victims' families are distraught in their search for the bodies of their loved ones.

An announcement has urged families not to go to the Islam Qala border on Saturday, 29 Qaws (December 19), to receive the bodies. The announcement emphasizes that after administrative procedures are completed in Iran, the bodies will be transferred to the country, and the handover time to the survivors will be announced.

To date, officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Taliban in Afghanistan have not issued any official response regarding this incident.

Local sources in Herat have reported that a number of Afghan migrants who intended to enter Iran have lost their lives inside Iranian territory due to severe cold weather.
