Friedrich Merz's first trip to Israel; Germany's support for Palestine meets Netanyahu's opposition

Mr. Merz announced his support for the creation of an independent Palestinian state during this meeting, while Benjamin Netanyahu once again opposed such a proposal.

In a joint press conference in Jerusalem, the two leaders discussed their priorities for Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

The German Chancellor's visit comes as the shadow of the extensive war in Gaza continues. Germany is one of Israel's staunchest supporters; however, the country does not label this war as genocide.

World leaders have warned about the fragile agreement in Gaza and called for the immediate start of talks for the second phase of the ceasefire. The Prime Minister of Qatar has also stated that the ceasefire is at a "critical moment."

Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, met with Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, on Sunday, December 7, during his first trip to Israel.
