Trump: Taliban is flattering; we may take equipment back from Afghanistan

Referring to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, Trump described the process as "catastrophic" and said the administration at the time abandoned a massive amount of military equipment in Afghanistan without being under any pressure. According to him, the troop withdrawal could have been carried out with planning and in a gradual manner.


He added that during his own presidency, there had also been a decision to withdraw from Afghanistan; however, this was intended to be accompanied by the complete transfer of equipment. Trump said even temporary equipment and tents should have been collected; but the subsequent administration left everything behind in Afghanistan.


The U.S. President then spoke of the possibility of reclaiming this equipment and stated that although much of it has now become outdated; Washington might still take action to retrieve it. He viewed this matter as more symbolic in nature.


Trump also claimed that the Taliban is working to improve relations with the United States and, in this regard, said: "The Taliban is flattering us."


He had previously raised the issue of retrieving the military equipment left behind in Afghanistan on several occasions; however, he has yet to provide any explanation on how such an action would be carried out. Trump has also repeatedly emphasized the strategic importance of the Bagram airbase and stated that he would like the United States to regain control of it.


In response, Taliban officials have previously rejected these remarks and said they would not allow the retrieval of the equipment. The Taliban refers to this equipment as "spoils of war" and has also opposed any return of the United States to the Bagram airbase.


According to official Pentagon reports, following the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan, equipment and weaponry worth approximately seven billion dollars remained in the country; equipment that includes aircraft, armored vehicles, weapons, and advanced night-vision systems.


The Joe Biden administration had previously announced that this equipment belonged to the security forces of the former Afghan government and that the United States had provided it to the Afghan army and security forces over the years of its presence there.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, once again criticized the manner of the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan on Wednesday on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit in France, stating that the Taliban is currently "flattering" the United States to gain Washington's favor. He also raised the possibility of retrieving the military equipment left behind in Afghanistan.
