Guterres arrives in Pakistan for two-day official visit

During this visit, the UN Secretary-General will meet with Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, the country's Prime Minister, and Ishaq Dar. He is also scheduled to meet with Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Commander of Pakistan's Armed Forces. Discussions in these meetings are expected to cover various regional and international issues.


Guterres will continue his trip by visiting the headquarters of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan. He will also go to the headquarters of Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority to receive information on the country's actions for preparedness against disasters and early warning mechanisms. This part of the visit's program focuses on cooperation related to disaster management and reducing risks from incidents.


Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has stated that during the UN Secretary-General's presence, Islamabad's activities and efforts to support multilateralism, international peace, and security will be highlighted. According to the ministry, Guterres's visit provides an opportunity to review regional and global developments and to reaffirm the longstanding cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations.


This trip comes as Antonio Guterres's 10-year term as UN Secretary-General is set to end on December 31, 2026. His current presence in Pakistan marks his second visit to the country in his capacity as UN Secretary-General, and in addition to meetings with senior Pakistani officials, the agenda will also address topics related to peace, security, international cooperation, and preparedness for disasters.



Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, arrived in Islamabad in the early hours of Tuesday as part of a two-day official visit. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry has announced that Guterres will be in Pakistan from October 6 to 8, at the invitation of Ishaq Dar, the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. This is his second trip to Pakistan during his tenure as UN Secretary-General; Guterres first visited the country in February 2020.
