UN allocates $1.7 million to support Afghan women entrepreneurs

The goal of implementing this initiative is to strengthen women's businesses and provide them with greater access to financial resources. Women participating in the program will receive, in addition to financial support, training related to financial and digital literacy, specialized consulting, and assistance in business planning and market access.


According to the United Nations Development Programme announcement, strengthening women's economic activities and increasing family incomes through this initiative could indirectly impact more than 14,000 people.


This program is launching at a time when women in Afghanistan face serious restrictions in accessing financial services. Statistics from the United Nations Development Programme show that fewer than seven percent of women in the country have a bank account or use mobile money services.


The organization has also stated that a large number of women rely on resources such as personal savings, borrowing from family and friends, or selling assets to sustain or expand their economic activities.


Based on information from the United Nations Development Programme, more than 10,000 women in Afghanistan currently hold business licenses—a figure that has increased tenfold over the past five years. On the other hand, the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry estimates the number of women active in the trade sector without licenses at around 120,000.


Tor Khan Saleh, the United Nations Development Programme representative in Afghanistan, stated that the main challenge for women entrepreneurs is not a lack of motivation for economic activity, but rather limitations in accessing the financial resources, skills, and networks needed to grow businesses.


The United Nations Development Programme is also working to raise an additional $10 million to expand this initiative. If this amount is secured, an additional 10,000 women entrepreneurs will benefit from financial and business support, and the program will indirectly cover around 70,000 people.


The United Nations Development Programme has announced that it has allocated $1.7 million to support women entrepreneurs in Afghanistan, with plans to assist around 1,500 women in the business sector over the next year.
