Sources: Taliban arrest female teacher in Takhar for writing critical poetry

Sources said that Mojda Uzbek was arrested due to poems she composed criticizing Taliban policies, as well as her connection to Rahila Dostum, a former member of the Senate and daughter of Abdul Rashid Dostum. Taliban officials in Takhar have not yet commented on this matter.

In response to the arrest, Rahila Dostum called it alarming and unjustifiable on her Facebook page, stating that poetry and thought should not be considered crimes. She demanded the immediate release of Mojda Uzbek and her return to her family.

Since returning to power in August 2021, the Taliban have imposed extensive restrictions on women's education and work, and women's and teachers' cultural, literary activities and critical statements have faced severe restrictions and oversight. According to statistics from the Taliban's Ministry of Interior published in February 2025, at least 1,825 women are currently held in Afghanistan's prisons.

The Office of the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan also stated in its quarterly report in June that the Taliban arbitrarily detained at least 389 women and men between March and May of this year while enforcing their Amr bil Maruf regulations.

Local sources in Takhar said that on Friday, October 2, the Taliban arrested Mojda Uzbek, a female teacher in Takhar, on charges of composing critical poems and ties to Rahila Dostum. According to the sources, she was arrested in the village of Hazarbagh in Khwaja Ghar district and then transferred to Taloqan.
