AFP: EU invites Taliban to Brussels for talks on Afghan refugees

The European Commission spokesperson has confirmed that officials from this union are preparing a technical meeting with Taliban representatives in Brussels; however, the exact date has not yet been announced.


This move comes as nearly 20 European Union member states are seeking ways to deport Afghan migrants, particularly those with criminal backgrounds. Previously, several European countries had urged the European Union in a letter to pursue political and diplomatic solutions to implement this process.


Meanwhile, human rights organizations and migrant advocacy groups have criticized this plan. In their view, returning Afghan citizens to a country facing severe human rights, economic, and humanitarian crises could put the lives of many individuals at risk.


European Union statistics show that from 2013 to 2024, nearly one million Afghan citizens have applied for asylum in European countries. Additionally, in 2025, Afghans have continued to top the list of asylum seekers in Europe.


Meanwhile, a number of European countries, including Germany, have already begun the process of deporting some Afghan migrants.

AFP has reported that the European Union will soon invite Taliban officials to Brussels for talks on the repatriation of Afghan migrants. According to the report, a letter is set to be sent to Kabul shortly to confirm the date of this meeting. It is said that this initiative has been arranged in collaboration with Sweden, and prior to the meeting, two European delegations will visit Afghanistan.
