Journalists' Center: Media repression in Afghanistan has escalated in a worrying way

This center, on (Saturday, May 2), issued a statement expressing serious concern over the increased pressures on media freedom and the continued detention of journalists, warning that the persistence of this situation could push Afghanistan further toward informational isolation.


According to this report, in the past 12 months, at least 150 violations of media freedom and journalists' rights have been recorded. Apart from the killing of two employees of the National Radio and Television and the wounding of one other in airstrikes attributed to Pakistani forces, responsibility for the other cases has been attributed to the Taliban.


It continues by stating that the Taliban, through the imposition of extensive restrictions on independent media, the creation of serious obstacles to access to information, and the systematic elimination of critical voices, have on one hand restricted the media space and on the other hand, through formal and informal structures, engaged in the promotion of targeted propaganda.


This center has added that in the absence of critical voices, one-sided narratives are produced and disseminated in line with the policy of "single-voicedness" and are reinforced through support for aligned individuals and networks in the media and virtual spaces.


It has also been emphasized that independent media, especially in the provinces, have faced serious damages due to increased restrictions and reduced financial resources, particularly following the decrease in support from international institutions. Meanwhile, the trend of journalists' migration continues unabated.


In conclusion, the Afghanistan Journalists Center has emphasized that the presence of independent media and free journalists to reflect the voice of the people and the real needs of society is a vital necessity for Afghanistan's future.

On World Press Freedom Day, the Afghanistan Journalists Center has announced that, based on the findings of this institution, since May 2025, the trend of suppression, censorship, and restriction of the media space in Afghanistan has intensified in a strikingly and alarmingly significant manner.
