TOLOnews journalists on trial; Taliban confirm their arrest

The ministry stated in a press release that reports published about the status of these journalists are incorrect; however, it provided no explanation regarding the reason for their arrest.


TOLOnews network also officially confirmed on Sunday, May 10, the arrest of its journalists and said that the Taliban, in contact with the network's officials, announced that more details would be released after "legal procedures are completed."


According to reports, Mansoor Niazi was arrested on May 7 from the Kart-e Chahar area of Kabul and transferred to an undisclosed location. Additionally, Emran Danesh, head of TOLOnews's political section, was arrested late on Saturday, May 9, near the network's office in Shirpur (Wazir Akbar Khan).


Following the publication of news about the arrest of these two journalists on TOLOnews's social media, the "Mobi Group" office was besieged by Taliban intelligence for more than six hours, and its employees were interrogated.


The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed concern over the arrest of TOLOnews journalists and the raid on the Mobi Group office, describing this Taliban action as part of the increasing pressure on independent media in Afghanistan.


The organization has called on the Taliban to immediately and unconditionally release the detained journalists and allow media outlets to continue their activities without threats or interference.


The Committee to Protect Journalists also stated that "Hamidullah Fitrat," deputy spokesman of the Taliban, has not responded to questions and requests from the organization for an explanation regarding the arrest of the journalists.


Meanwhile, "Jawid Niazi," another journalist in Kabul, was also arrested on May 6 after being summoned to the Taliban's intelligence department, and no information about his status has been released to date.


The arrest of these journalists has prompted reactions from media support organizations and journalists.


Afghanistan ranks 175th out of 180 countries in the latest global press freedom index. This year, the Taliban removed the word "freedom" from the title of World Press Freedom Day, and no female journalists were present at the event held.

The Taliban Ministry of Information and Culture confirmed on Tuesday the arrest of "Mansoor Niazi" and "Emran Danesh," two journalists from TOLOnews network, stating that the case of these two individuals is under review and that the Taliban court has not yet made any decision regarding them.
