Kohat mosque attack; death toll rises to 31

The attack occurred on Friday afternoon, coinciding with Friday prayers. According to published reports, the assailants drove a vehicle packed with explosives toward a mosque inside the old Police Lines compound in Kohat city, followed by gunfire.


The explosion caused heavy damage to the mosque building. The Police Lines compound houses, in addition to this mosque, the city's central police headquarters and other key sections, including the counterterrorism department and the special branch of the police. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Pakistani officials have once again emphasized their continued resolute fight against terrorist groups.


The Kohat attack has taken place amid circumstances in which Islamabad has repeatedly attributed the increase in attacks in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to militants who, according to Pakistani officials' claims, organize their activities from Afghan soil. The Taliban has rejected this claim.



The death toll from a suicide bombing and shooting attack by armed assailants in the city of Kohat, in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, has risen to at least 31 killed, with more than 100 others wounded in the incident. Local police officials have said that at least 16 of the deceased were members of the police forces.
