WFP: Aid cuts have exacerbated malnutrition crisis in Afghanistan

According to this organization, large numbers of women and children visit health centers every day to receive treatment services resulting from malnutrition.

The organization says that, in collaboration with its partner institutions, it has been able to provide food items and nutritional supplements to thousands of affected individuals.

On (Monday, 30 Qaws), the World Food Programme issued a message on the social network X expressing gratitude for the contributions of donors and emphasizing that these aids play a crucial role in ensuring the future health of mothers and children.

Previously, the World Food Programme had announced that Afghanistan ranks fourth in the world in terms of acute child malnutrition rates. Based on this organization's assessments, nearly five million mothers and children are currently grappling with malnutrition, and this situation continues to deteriorate.

It has also been warned that, with the approaching winter season, more than 17 million people in Afghanistan are facing severe food insecurity—a crisis that is directly linked to the increase in acute malnutrition cases. Data shows that hunger levels have risen compared to the previous year, and in the current calendar year, approximately three million more people have been added to the number of those at risk of severe hunger.

Meanwhile, according to the deputy of the World Food Programme, the organization's financial resources in the current calendar year have faced a significant reduction, with received aid being about 80 percent less than in the past—a matter that has seriously challenged the response to growing needs.

The World Food Programme has warned of the worsening nutritional situation for women and children in Afghanistan and announced that the number of malnutrition cases in the country is on the rise.
