World Food Programme: 17 million people in Afghanistan face severe food insecurity

According to this report, the scope and severity of hunger and malnutrition are on the rise. New food security statistics published in the latest "Integrated Food Security Phase Classification" (IPC) report for Afghanistan show that, compared to 14.8 million people last year, an additional three million people are now facing severe hunger or worse (IPC3+).

Another section of the report states that child malnutrition is expected to increase next year, affecting nearly four million children.

The head of the World Food Programme in Afghanistan said:

"Our teams are witnessing families skipping meals for several days in a row and resorting to extreme measures to survive. Child mortality is rising, and there is a risk that this situation will worsen in the coming months."

This organization has stated that Afghanistan is bracing for a harsh and merciless winter; while multiple crises are simultaneously engulfing the country. Drought has affected half of the country and destroyed agricultural crops. Job losses and a weakened economy have exhausted people's incomes and livelihoods. Recent earthquakes have also left many families homeless and driven humanitarian needs to unprecedented levels.

Additionally, forced returns from Pakistan and Iran have exacerbated these needs; with 2.5 million Afghan citizens returned to the country since the beginning of the year, many of whom suffer from severe malnutrition and poverty. It is expected that nearly the same number will return in 2026 as well.

The World Food Programme has announced that it requires $468 million in immediate assistance to deliver lifesaving food aid to six million of Afghanistan's most vulnerable people and help them get through the harsh winter.

The World Food Programme, affiliated with the United Nations, has announced in a report that more than 17 million people in Afghanistan will face acute food insecurity in the upcoming winter.
