According to this new law, full face covering is only permitted in cases where the law requires it for performing official duties, medical reasons, protection against harsh weather conditions, civil defense purposes, or participation in sports and cultural events.
The law states: "Wearing clothing that prevents facial identification in public places is prohibited, except in specific cases approved by the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan."
Kazakhstan's lawmakers have cited the difficulty of identifying individuals in government buildings and public places as the reason for this prohibition.
It is worth noting that, prior to this, Uzbekistan had similarly banned face covering in public places to maintain public order.
The President of Kazakhstan has signed a law prohibiting the covering of the face in public places.
