New Internet Restrictions in Afghanistan; Six Provinces Face Service Cutoffs

Citizens in Herat say that although the expansion of the fiber optic network was halted two weeks ago, some government offices and private residences are still using these services. However, local sources warn that these services may also be completely stopped in the coming days.

In Balkh province, the Taliban have explicitly announced that, based on their leader's directive, the use of fiber optic internet has been banned in the province. They cited "preventing vices" as the reason for this action and stated that only limited internal channels will remain open to meet administrative needs.

At the same time, wireless or "Wi-Fi" services have also been disrupted in the provinces of Kandahar, Uruzgan, Helmand, Nimroz, and Balkh. Currently, people in these areas can only access the internet through private telecommunications networks using SIM cards.

According to sources, this action is part of the Taliban's phased approach to further restrict the virtual space in Afghanistan. Over the past three weeks, fiber optic services in several provinces have either been completely shut down or their speed has been drastically reduced, an issue that has posed serious challenges to people's daily lives, education, and commerce.

Sources in Afghanistan confirm that the Taliban have cut off people's access to fiber optic and wireless internet in six Afghan provinces over the past 24 hours. The provinces of Balkh, Kandahar, Helmand, Herat, Uruzgan, and Nimroz have been the most affected by this decision.
