Russia and Taliban discuss Afghanistan-Pakistan border tensions in Islamabad

Albert Khorev, Russia's ambassador to Pakistan, wrote in a note on his account on the social network "X" on Saturday (December 5) that this meeting was held with a focus on the "security situation and efforts to strengthen regional peace and stability."

According to him, the two sides also reviewed the state of relations between Moscow and the Taliban and emphasized the expansion of cooperation in areas of importance to both parties.

This meeting took place at a time when, one day earlier, local sources had reported an exchange of fire between Pakistani forces and the Taliban in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar province, at the Pakistan's Chaman border. It is said that this clash began on Friday evening (December 4) and continued for several hours.

Russia had previously announced that it was ready to play a mediating role in reducing the escalating tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan. Albert Khorev had also previously spoken of Moscow's readiness to help resolve disputes between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, referring to the situation in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, emphasized that the country is facing "serious challenges." Without providing further explanations, he described the prolonged civil war in Afghanistan as "catastrophic."

Following the increase in tensions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, representatives from Russia and the Taliban held discussions in Islamabad regarding the security situation in the region.
