UN: Taliban rejects invitation to attend meeting on Afghan women

The meeting, held on Tuesday in Geneva, aimed to address the situation of women in Afghanistan. During the meeting, Afghanistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva presented the fourth periodic report of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.
Committee members examined the systematic discrimination and suppression of women and girls by the Taliban during the meeting.
Bandana Rana, a committee member and the person responsible for handling Afghanistan’s case, said: “This committee has a legal, international, and moral obligation to examine the situation of women and girls in Afghanistan with transparency and resolve.”
It is noteworthy that a delegation consisting of former Afghan officials and several women’s rights activists in exile also attended the meeting. Despite the Taliban being invited to participate informally in the meeting, they did not respond to the invitation.
The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women announced that Taliban authorities were invited to participate in the committee’s recent meeting; however, they ignored the invitation.
