New Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General officially begins work in Afghanistan

UNAMA stated in a statement on Tuesday, 26 Jowza, that the new Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations will be responsible for coordinating all agencies, funds, and programs of this organization in Afghanistan.


According to UNAMA, the appointment of Bruno Lemarquis to this position was made by António Guterres. He has replaced Andrička Ratwatte and has taken on the responsibility of leading the United Nations Deputy Mission in Afghanistan.


Bruno Lemarquis previously served from 2022 to 2026 as the Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Peace Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator in that country.


Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council on Monday, 25 Jowza, extended the mandate of the United Nations Deputy Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year. This resolution, which was presented by China, was adopted with 15 votes in favor from the Council members.

The Office of the United Nations Representative has announced that Bruno Lemarquis, the new Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General of this organization, has arrived in Kabul and has officially begun his work in Afghanistan.
