Matiullah Wesa, an education activist in Afghanistan, wins the 2026 Azadi Prize

According to the organizers of this competition, over 18,000 young people from 75 countries around the world participated in the voting process and selected Wisa as the winner of the eighth edition of this award. This selection is seen as a reflection of widespread global concern regarding the state of education in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.


In recent years, Matiullah Wisa has undertaken extensive efforts to promote a culture of education by traveling to remote and deprived areas of Afghanistan, consistently emphasizing the right of all children—especially girls—to access education; a right that, following the Taliban's return to power, has faced severe restrictions, depriving millions of girls of schooling.


The awarding of this prize to Wisa is viewed not only as recognition of his activities but also as a clear message in support of the struggle against the Taliban's restrictive policies; policies that have turned Afghanistan into one of the world's most critical countries in terms of educational rights.
