Nobel Peace Prize: Not being awarded is a "stain on Norway's reputation"

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday named Navanethem Pillay, an 85-year-old South African jurist and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as the winner of this year's Peace Prize.

The committee cited his efforts in promoting peace and strengthening international law as the reason for awarding this prize.

In response to this decision, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the Nobel Committee's performance and described the failure to award the prize to him as a "stain of shame" on Norway's credibility. He had previously repeatedly emphasized his role in resolving international conflicts and sought to receive this award.

In another development, just a few hours after the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, the Trump administration imposed sanctions against the International Criminal Court. Washington has long opposed the activities of this institution and had previously targeted several of its judges and prosecutors with sanctions.

The U.S. government has particularly criticized the International Criminal Court's actions regarding the case of Israeli officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu. The institution's investigations into the actions of U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan have also been among the issues that have faced opposition from Washington.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, criticized the Nobel Committee's decision after the announcement of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Referring to his own claim of having stopped more than eight wars, he called his exclusion from receiving the award shameful and said this decision damages Norway's credibility.
