AMSO: No journalist in Afghanistan is immune from arbitrary arrests by the Taliban

The organization has emphasized that the Taliban are effectively pursuing "total censorship" over the media landscape, and in its view, no amount of compliance or leniency from domestic media can prevent the group's pressures and restrictions.


AMSO says that in the past week alone, at least three journalists have been detained by the Taliban without explanation, and their places of detention remain unclear. According to the organization, this trend indicates an escalation of pressure on Afghanistan's media community.


Meanwhile, sources had previously reported that Mansoor Niazi, a journalist with TOLOnews, was arrested on Thursday (May 7) from the Kart-e Chahar area of Kabul and transferred to an unknown location. TOLOnews has confirmed his detention and reported the arrest of another of its journalists, Imran Danesh.


In a press release, AMSO stated that at present, at least eight journalists are being held in Taliban custody, and this situation has caused serious damage to freedom of expression and media activity in the country. The organization added that the detentions are carried out in a "completely arbitrary" manner and without any clear legal framework by the Taliban's intelligence apparatus.


The organization concluded by urging international bodies and media freedom advocacy groups to respond seriously to the ongoing detention of journalists in Afghanistan. Previously, Reporters Without Borders had announced in its annual report that Afghanistan under Taliban rule ranks 175 out of 180 countries in the global press freedom index.

The Afghanistan Media Support Organization (AMSO) has expressed concern over a fresh wave of journalist detentions in the country, stating that under Taliban rule, there is no real guarantee of protection for media workers, and even outlets aligned with the group's policies are not immune to arbitrary arrests.
