Amnesty International calls for immediate release of three journalists detained in Taliban prison

The organization has stated that Mansour Niazi and Emran Danesh, journalists with TOLOnews, as well as Javed Niazi, editor-in-chief of a local media outlet, have been detained by the Taliban's intelligence agency, and their fates remain unknown.


According to Amnesty International, these actions constitute arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, raising serious concerns about the health and safety of these journalists. The organization has emphasized that such conduct represents a blatant violation of Afghanistan's obligations under international human rights law.


Amnesty International has also warned that, under current conditions, there is a risk of torture and ill-treatment of detainees. The organization has called on the Taliban to immediately disclose the whereabouts of these three journalists and provide their families with information regarding their status.


This human rights body has stressed that detainees must have access to legal counsel and, in the absence of specific charges, be released. Otherwise, any judicial process must adhere to international standards of fair trial.


According to a report by the Afghanistan Journalists Center, Javed Niazi was detained on May 6 following a summons to the intelligence agency, and subsequently, Mansour Niazi and Emran Danesh were also arrested in Kabul in the following days and transferred to an unknown location. TOLOnews has confirmed the detention of its two journalists but has not provided further details.

Amnesty International has expressed concern over the arrest and disappearance of three Afghan journalists, describing it as part of a growing trend of pressure and intimidation against media outlets in Afghanistan.
