Tajikistan deports 250 Afghan refugee families following criminal incident

According to these sources, the refugees were expelled from the country without sufficient opportunity to gather their belongings. One of the deported refugees says: "Everything was left behind there."


This action comes as the Tajik Ministry of Interior had previously announced that it had detained a 22-year-old Afghan man on charges of murdering a 27-year-old Tajik woman in late April.


The ministry's statement indicates that the accused had been living illegally in the village of Dehnomoi, Jabor Rasulov district, in the city of Khujand, and had killed the woman with stabs from a kitchen knife.


Following this incident, a number of Afghan citizens in the cities of Khujand and Dushanbe had said that local authorities had transferred around 250 Afghan families to a camp in Dushanbe.


It is said that these families had previously fled to Tajikistan due to political problems with the Taliban and fears of retaliation.


Meanwhile, sources say the accused has claimed that the murder was carried out with the collaboration of several other individuals; however, the Tajik Ministry of Interior has not yet commented on the possibility of involvement or detention of other people.

Local sources have reported that the government of Tajikistan deported approximately 250 Afghan migrant families to Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan on the morning of Tuesday, May 5.
