Maryam Rahmati Receives UN Journalists Association Award

Since the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, Maryam Rahmaty has consistently covered developments related to the country, public protests, and human rights violations in Afghanistan and Iran. Restrictions against women and the suppression of their rights have also been central themes in her reporting.

This journalist says she has always strived to reflect the voices of women, victims of human rights violations, and the international community's and United Nations' responses to developments in Afghanistan and Iran in her reports. In addition to covering events at UN headquarters, she has also followed political developments and human rights issues.

With this award, Maryam Rahmaty is recognized as the first Afghan journalist to receive the United Nations Correspondents Association award. Although Afghan journalists have previously received numerous international awards, this is the first time an Afghan citizen has won the UNCA award.

The United Nations Correspondents Association award is one of the prestigious honors in international journalism and is given to journalists who have played a prominent role in covering global events. According to the published report, the award ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 3, 2026, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, with Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the organization, also in attendance.

Maryam Rahmaty, Afghanistan International's correspondent at the United Nations headquarters in New York, has won the United Nations Correspondents Association (UNCA) Bronze Award in 2026. This award, in the "Ricardo Ortega Memorial" category, is given in recognition of outstanding work in television and radio coverage of events related to the United Nations.
