Karzai asks Taliban to explain peace agreement between residents of border areas and Pakistan

On Saturday, he stated in a published statement that recently, a number of tribal elders on both sides of the border have signed documents titled "Peace Agreements"; agreements that, according to him, have also been confirmed and welcomed by Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Karzai has described this process as an action aimed at legitimizing the Durand Line and stated that such maneuvers are in conflict with Afghanistan's national sovereignty. He also, without directly referring to the Taliban, called on officials to provide clear and transparent explanations to the people regarding these events and their consequences.


Meanwhile, Tahir Andrabi, spokesperson for Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had previously welcomed the ceasefire agreements between local elders on both sides of the border in the Kunar and Nuristan regions. On Thursday, May 7, he said these agreements demonstrate the desire of the people living on both sides of the border to establish peace and tranquility.


The tribal elders of Nuristan entered into talks with Pakistani border forces in the Chitral region after the roads to the Kamdesh and Barg-i-Matal districts remained closed for about two months and the risk of famine and hunger increased. These contacts ultimately led to a ceasefire agreement between the two sides.


Additionally, a number of elders from the border areas of Kunar, following the example of the residents of Nuristan, established contact with elders from Bajaur on the other side of the border and reached a similar agreement to halt the conflicts.


Despite these developments, Taliban officials have so far shown no reaction to the signing of these local agreements in the border regions.

Hamid Karzai, the former president of Afghanistan, has announced that Pakistan has increased its military and economic pressures on the residents of villages near the Durand Line in recent months, attempting to force the people of these areas to turn to Pakistani institutions to resolve security issues and other matters.
