Clashes in Nuristan and Kunar; Freedom Front announces capture of Taliban checkpoints

According to the Freedom Front, the Taliban initiated the initial assault using drones; however, the front's commando forces targeted and downed several drones before launching a counterattack. The group claims that the Taliban have retreated from the Arandu area and parts of Kamdesh toward Nari.


The Freedom Front's statement also claims that a large quantity of Taliban weapons, equipment, and fortifications fell into the hands of its forces during the operation, with dozens of drones destroyed as well. A resident of Kamdesh also reported hearing sounds of fighting in the area. These clashes are reported amid prior engagements between the Freedom Front and the Taliban in Zebak District of Badakhshan, with recent events in Nuristan and Kunar signaling the start of fresh fighting in these two regions.


In response, media outlets close to Taliban intelligence, including Hejaz Farsi, have presented a different narrative, stating that Taliban forces repelled the Freedom Front's attack and "foiled a conspiracy" or "sedition" in Kamdesh District. Both sides have also reported casualties inflicted on the opposing forces. The Freedom Front stated that at least five Taliban bodies were left on the battlefield and a minimum of 10 wounded from the group were transported to a hospital. On the other side, media aligned with the Taliban claim that 15 Freedom Front members were killed in the Nuristan clashes.


Hejaz News has also claimed that six Freedom Front members were detained in Nuristan; however, officials from the front have denied this assertion. To date, the Taliban administration has not officially commented on the Freedom Front's claims, and details regarding casualties and the outcomes of the clashes cannot be independently verified. As a result, the two sides' narratives regarding the extent of advances, casualties, and the status of their forces remain at the level of mutual claims.


Meanwhile, a video has circulated on social media showing a Taliban fighter interrogating an unarmed young man in Nuristan; the youth, speaking in Persian, says he is from Kabul and does not understand Pashto, after which he is slapped. Taliban intelligence media, by releasing an image of the individual, have claimed he is a Freedom Front member; however, an official from the front stated that the young man has no connection to the group and may be a local tourist. In the released video, the individual appears to be a civilian and unarmed, and Exiled Television cannot independently verify the claims made about his identity or other details of the Nuristan and Kunar clashes.



The Freedom Front of Afghanistan announced on Saturday that its forces, in response to a Taliban attack, conducted an operation in parts of Kamdesh District in Nuristan and Nari District in Kunar, capturing several Taliban outposts. The front stated that the clashes began at dawn on Saturday and were ongoing.
