Trump: Negotiations with Iran are going 'very well'

Trump stated in an interview broadcast on Fox News on the morning of Wednesday, August 4: "They tell you we’re having fantastic talks; but then someone from Iran shows up and says we haven’t had any meetings."


He also, referring to the stance of Islamic Republic officials, said that they even deny negotiating about the nuclear program and added: "So what are we talking about? Are we just sitting there with our hands folded?"


The U.S. President emphasized that Tehran’s public statements hold no importance for him and said what matters is the other side’s performance. He added: "They want a deal. We’ll see what happens. If they don’t make a deal, things will get very bad for them."


These remarks come as discussions between Washington and Tehran have been accompanied by numerous ups and downs in recent months and have constantly fluctuated between diplomatic messages and military threats.


Trump has previously repeatedly spoken of progress in the negotiations while simultaneously warning that if no agreement is reached, the United States would keep the military option on the table. From Washington’s perspective, the main axes of these negotiations include reopening and ensuring the security of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and preventing advances in Iran’s nuclear program.


U.S. officials believe that the Islamic Republic shows greater flexibility in private discussions; however, in public stances, it prefers to deny the principle of the negotiations or their details. Trump has also repeatedly described this approach as a sign of "dishonesty" on the part of the other side.


On the other side, Iranian officials have consistently emphasized that any negotiation must be conducted with respect for national sovereignty and without unilateral preconditions. They have also rejected some of Washington’s claims about the content of these discussions.

Donald Trump, President of the United States, has stated that the course of negotiations with the Islamic Republic is progressing "very well," although according to him, Iranian officials are reluctant to confirm these discussions in the public arena.
