Nay in exile calls on UN and EU to take action to release detained journalists

The institution states that since Thursday, the Taliban have arrested at least three journalists, including Mansour Niazi and Imran Danish from TOLOnews, as well as Jawid Niazi, the head of the Pegah News Agency. According to reports, at least seven journalists and media workers are currently imprisoned by the Taliban, including Bashir Hatef, Hamid Farhadi, Shakib Nazari, Jawid Niazi, Imran Danish, and Mansour Niazi.


Nay in Exile stated in a press release that the arrest of journalists has become a "routine and ongoing practice" of the Taliban, and that silence on the matter is unacceptable. The institution added that over the nearly five years since their return to power, the Taliban have arrested approximately 400 journalists and media workers.


The statement notes that at least seven journalists and media workers remain in Taliban prisons, and in some cases, the Taliban have even confirmed their detentions. According to Nay in Exile, these figures indicate that the Taliban, on average, arrest three journalists or media workers every two weeks.


The institution further emphasized that the Taliban's actions demonstrate that, contrary to their claims, the group has not changed and continues to exhibit a hostile stance toward human values and media freedom.

The Afghan Free Media Support Institution "Nay in Exile" has called on the United Nations Mission and the European Union delegation in Kabul to engage in talks with Taliban authorities to pave the way for the release of imprisoned journalists, in response to the recent arrests of journalists by the Taliban.
