Human Rights: Girls' Education Connection Threatens Afghanistan's Future

This meeting was held by the "Hamrah" Human Rights Network on the sidelines of the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva.


During this program, a report titled "Taliban Religious Schools: Ideological Consolidation, Gender Persecution, and Afghanistan's Future Stability" was presented and discussed. A number of human rights figures, including Farida Shaheed, Richard Bennett, Farishta Abbasi, and Soraya Delail, were present at this meeting.


Timor Sharan, former deputy minister of local government organs of Afghanistan's previous government, said in a part of this meeting that the number of religious schools in Afghanistan has surpassed modern state schools, and this trend has fueled the expansion of gender discrimination and the deprivation of girls from education.


Farida Shaheed, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to education, also warned that if the current situation persists and there is no effective action from the international community, the educational situation for girls and women in Afghanistan will deteriorate further.


Richard Bennett, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, also described the education situation as alarming and emphasized the need to counter educational restrictions and the expansion of religious educational structures.


Soraya Delail, former Minister of Health of Afghanistan, also pointed out in this meeting, with reference to the long-term consequences of excluding women from the workforce, that this trend is detrimental to the country's economy, society, and health system.

A number of experts and human rights defenders at a meeting in Geneva have warned that the Taliban's continued restrictions on the education of girls and women could confront Afghanistan's future with far-reaching social and economic consequences. They have called on the international community to take more effective actions in support of the right to education for Afghan girls.
