Trump visits China for first time since 2017

Reuters news agency has reported that Trump will arrive in Beijing on Wednesday, with the two sides' official meetings and negotiations continuing on Thursday and Friday. This will be the first in-person meeting between the leaders of the two countries in about the past six months.


According to reports, the main focus of these discussions will be reducing trade tensions between the world's two largest economies, examining the consequences of the Iran war, and managing bilateral disputes. Topics such as Taiwan, nuclear programs, artificial intelligence, and China's relations with Russia are also on the agenda for both sides.


U.S. officials have said that Washington and Beijing will likely reach an agreement during this trip on establishing new mechanisms to facilitate bilateral trade and investment.


It is also expected that China will announce new purchases of Boeing aircraft, agricultural products, and U.S. energy.


Reports also indicate the possibility of establishing a joint "Trade Committee" and "Investment Committee" between the two countries, although implementing these initiatives will require further negotiations. Extending the trade war ceasefire and continuing China's exports of rare earth minerals to the United States are also cited as other key discussion points.


In the political and security sphere, Washington has asked China to use its influence over Iran to encourage Tehran to accept an agreement and end the war. In response, Beijing continues to criticize U.S. military support for Taiwan. Discussions on technology competition and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence in China will also be part of the upcoming negotiations.

China's state media have announced that Donald Trump, President of the United States, will travel to China on an official visit from May 13 to 15; a trip that marks his first visit to Beijing since 2017. Trump is expected to discuss a range of political, security, and economic issues with Xi Jinping, President of China, during this visit.
